Sailing to Freedom: Maritime Dimensions of the Underground Railroad

Sailing to Freedom: Maritime Dimensions of the Underground Railroad In-Person

Self-emancipation along the Underground Railroad was not entirely by overland routes. What has been largely overlooked by historians is the great number of enslaved persons who made their way to freedom using coastal water routes along the Atlantic seaboard.

Join scholars Marcus Rediker (Professor of History; University of Pittsburgh), Michael Thompson (Associate Professor of History; University of Tennessee) and Timothy Walker (Professor of History; University of Massachusetts) in conversation to learn more about this hidden history.

An exhibit viewing and reception will follow the conversation.

The event is free and open to all. Registration is required.

Sponsored by the College of Charleston Friends of the Library and the Carolina Lowcountry and Atlantic World Program.
