Dr. Conseula Francis Reading Circle Book Discussion of Octavia E. Butler's "Parable of the Talents" Online
This April 2025 we are celebrating Dr. Conseula Francis Month (former College of Charleston educator and administrator) by taking it back to where the Reading Circle began-the John L. Dart Public Library! Dr. Francis created the “Dart After Dark Book Circle,” as a community focused reading club, introducing readers to a wide range of African American writers and genres.
On Thursday, April 17th, 6:00-7:00pm (EST) we will discuss Parable of the Talents by Dr. Francis’ beloved author, Octavia E. Butler.
“Environmental devastation and economic chaos have turned America into a land of horrifying depravity. Assault, theft, sexual abuse, slavery, and murder are commonplace. Taking advantage of the situation, a zealous, bigoted tyrant wins his way into the White House.
Directly opposed is Lauren Olamina, founder of Earthseed - a new faith that teaches "God Is Change.” Persecuted for "heathen" beliefs as much as for having a Black female leader, Earthseed's followers face a life-and-death struggle to preserve their vision.”
NOTE: We will meet in-person at the John L. Dart Library (1067 King St, Charleston). The Reading Circle will also be telecasted via Zoom.
