Black and Brown Interpreters Meetup - Mepkin Abbey In-Person
Join us for a Grounds and Garden Tour of Mepkin Abbey with Eleanor Cooper-Brown. Since 2018, Eleanor has hosted the Heritage Sacred Spaces Tour throughout the Moncks Corner and Charleston area, which centers around the religious significance of Lowcountry sites and their relationship to the people of the African Diaspora.
During the Grounds and Garden Tour we will visit the African American Cemetery, the Meditation Garden of Truth and Reconciliation at the Henry Laurens Family Cemetery, the Luce Garden and Cooper River Rice Field remnants as we discuss the history and present use of property.
Lineup:
11am - 11:30am: Check in and announcements at Welcome Center
11:45am - 1pm: Grounds and Garden Tour with Eleanor Cooper-Brown
**Please dress comfortably for the outdoors. We will be standing and walking approximately 1 mile. Sunscreen, water bottles, bug spray and binoculars are all encouraged. These meetups are appropriate for ages 16 and up.
Spaces are limited. There are no plus ones. Everyone must register individually.
_____
The Black and Brown Interpreters Network is a group of natural and cultural history interpreters and tour guides based in the Lowcountry and beyond who are dedicated to service, education and professional development in the field of heritage interpretation.
We meet monthly to learn from our fellow Black and Brown Interpreters and tour guides; network, share opportunities for continuing education and scholarships, explore local history and more.
Our meetups are open to the community of Black and Brown people who identify as cultural/historical and natural history interpreters, tour guides and tour company owners; and/or Black and Brown people who have completed or plan to complete the National Association for Interpretation's Certified Interpretive Guide training course.
