Film Screening: Lowndes County and the Road to Black Power with Mukasa "Willie Ricks" Dada In-Person
Join us for a screening and discussion of the documentary Lowndes County and the Road to Black Power with veteran Student Non-Violent Coordinating Committee (SNCC) organizer Mukasa "Willie Ricks" Dada!
Through first person accounts and archival footage, the film tells the story of the local Black-led campaign of SNCC organizers, activists and community members who fought for voting rights and Black Power in Lowndes County, Alabama.
As we will see in the documentary, Dada coined the phrase "Black Power" popularized by fellow SNCC organizer Kwame Ture (formerly Stokely Carmichael) at the Mereditch March in 1966. We will discuss this and more at the screening!
