Black and Brown Interpreters Meetup - Charles Towne Landing

Black and Brown Interpreters Meetup - Charles Towne Landing In-Person

Join us for the "Africans in Early American Tour" at Charles Towne Landing State Historic Site with certified interpretive guide and trainer Erica Veal. Early records from the first English colony in South Carolina tell us that Africans were among the first settlers at Charles Towne. The majority were trafficked there by colonists from Barbados, which began an unbroken transmission of African contributions to South Carolina.

During this tour we will explore how the increasing presence of Africans as enslaved laborers at early Charles Towne strengthened the economic viability of the colony, contributed materially to its defense against attackers, broadened the culture of the settlement.

Lineup:

10am-1030am - Check-in and announcement outside welcome center

1030am-1230pm - Africans in Early American Tour with Erica Veal**

**Please dress comfortably for the outdoors. We will be walking for about 1-3 miles. Sunscreen, water bottles, bug spray and binoculars are all encouraged. These meetups are appropriate for ages 16 and up.

Spaces are limited. There are no plus ones. Everyone must register individually.

_____

The Black and Brown Interpreters Network is a group of natural and cultural history interpreters and tour guides based in the Lowcountry and beyond who are dedicated to service, education and professional development in the field of heritage interpretation.

We meet monthly at different heritage sites to learn from our fellow Black and Brown Interpreters and tour guides; network, share opportunities for continuing education and scholarships, explore local history and more.

Our meetups are open to the community of Black and Brown people who identify as cultural/historical and natural history interpreters, tour guides and tour company owners; and/or Black and Brown people who have completed or plan to complete the National Association for Interpretation's Certified Interpretive Guide training course.
